Tumor Research & Connections To Baseball

By Rob Sutter

Recently, it seems like the subject of tumor research has found its way into baseball. For those who aren't familiar with the sport or perhaps do not keep up with the news, recently Darren Daulton was diagnosed, which is an unfortunate piece of news. While this is definitely newsworthy, what I did not think about at the time was how many actual cases have occurred in the sport. It's a subject that deserves the attention of this kind of research since one coincidence has seemingly occurred after another.

TIME.com posted a piece on the matter and it was learned that Daulton had glioblastoma, the most aggressive condition that can be seen in the realm of tumor research. I'm sure that many authorities would agree on the matter, Voices against Brain Cancer amongst them. There have been other names that were stricken with this condition in the past as well, Gary Carter and Ken Brett being a couple of several. Is it possible that their position of catcher had anything to do with it?

Steroids have been an issue in sports for quite some time and they've been especially prevalent in baseball. However, other sports have made use of this and this is where NFL defensive lineman Lyle Alzado comes into the picture. He passed away because of this condition back in 1992 and he was known to have used anabolic steroids throughout his career. Even though he had brain lymphoma - not glioblastoma, like Daulton, I think that this is one point which more than worth bringing up.

I think it is difficult to predict whether these factors can be considered correlated. This is one condition which it is difficult to predict the source of. Maybe there is a possible connection to be made and we just have not been able to find out what the specifics are. What is known, though, is that work is constantly being done on the matter and that it is possible that we will find out results in the realm of research before long, which I hope is the case.

When you get down to it, I think that this is a matter of the condition occurring as you become older. Daulton had been a retired ball player for a number of years, so it is fair to assume that the condition came about as a result. Glioblastoma is a condition which impacts many Americans, around 18,000 for those who want more solid statistics. Tumor research is going to be done constantly, though, which gives me hope that there will be results which can be utilized in the long run.
